Which Connecticut Casino Resort Is Right for You? Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun?

COMPARING ConnecticuT'S two LARGEST CASINOS IN 2025

When you think of the word "casino", odds are you're picturing a place like the Las Vegas strip, right? Well, Las Vegas isn't the only place with award-winning casinos. In fact, Connecticut is home to not one but TWO of the United States' top rated casinos: Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Resort Casino. The only problem with that is visitors then question: "Which casino is better?" and "If I only have time to go to one of Connecticut's casinos, which one should it be?" Unfortunately the answer to this is completely subjective, so I've broken down all the facts for you below to help you make your decision. As a CT native, I've been to both casinos numerous times and love each for different reasons.

Which Is Bigger: Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods?

Foxwoods Resort Casino is larger, covering 9,000,000 square feet with six casinos, three hotels, 5,500+ slot machines, and 250 gaming tables. It's considered to be the largest casino in Connecticut and one of the top largest casinos in the United States. Mohegan Sun Casino, on the other hand, has over 5,500,000 square feet of indoor space.

Mohegan Sun vs. Foxwoods Player Rewards Program

Below compares Mohegan Sun's Momentum Rewards Program and Foxwoods’ Rewards Program, focusing on how they stack up in terms of tiers, benefits, and earning potential:

Tiers

Mohegan Sun's Momentum Rewards Program Tiers: Core, Ignite, Leap, Ascend, Soar

Foxwoods' Resort Program Tiers: Wonder, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Emerald

Despite the fact that both programs offer better perks as you move up through each tier, Mohegan's Momentum Program has Momentum Achievements, which are spend-based bonuses that help you move up faster.

Earning & Spending

Mohegan Sun's Momentum Rewards Program: You can earn rewards when you spend on gaming, hotel, dining, and shopping throughout the casino. Then, the Momentum Dollars you earn from this can be used anywhere in the casino like real money.

Foxwoods' Resort Program: Players earn most of their rewards through gaming and there is limited non-game spending with those rewards. These points do expire after 12 months of inactivity, so they need to be used.

Non-Gaming Perks

Mohegan Sun's Momentum Rewards Program: This casino comparatively offers stronger rewards on hotel, dining, spa, and shopping. They also offer discounts on in-house events and exclusive invites for higher tier players.

Foxwoods' Resort Program: This casino is more focused on gaming-center perks. Non-gaming benefits only improve once players move to the higher tiers.

Which Casino Is Better for Rewards?

Mohegan Sun's Momentum Rewards Program: Go to Mohegan Sun is you're planning on enjoying a number of their amenities including dining, shopping, concerts, and/or spa days—not just gaming. This way you'll be able to earn and use the points widely in all these areas as well.

Foxwoods' Resort Program: Visit Foxwoods Casino if your main focus is gambling in the casino and moving up to higher tiers.

In addition, in 2024 in the Best Players Clubs category Mohegan Sun was ranked No. 2, while Foxwoods came in at No. 8, making it seem like Mohegan Sun is better overall for rewards.

Best Casino for Hotel Stays: Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods?

According to the Norwich Bulletin, "In the 2024 best casino awards, ranking casinos across the United States in a variety of categories, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville won three awards and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket won two." The exact awards? Mohegan Sun won the Best Casino Hotel category, taking home the No. 1 spot for the seventh year in a row. In the category for Best Casino Outside Las Vegas, Foxwoods ranked No. 2 and Mohegan Sun No. 5. So if we're talking strictly about which casino is best for hotel stays, it appears that Mohegan Sun is more favorably ranked in comparison despite the fact it only has two hotels compared to Foxwood's Casinos three hotels. I've personally only stayed at Mohegan Sun Casino but I've stayed overnight 10+ times and each time it's been super enjoyable, so this wasn't that surprising to me.

Mohegan Sun vs. Foxwoods Restaurants and Dining Options

While this may be a completely subjective opinion, I believe that both Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Resort Casino have exceptional dining options- it just depends on what you like! Mohegan Sun Casino's most popular restaurants are Michael Jordan’s Steak House, TAO Asian Bistro, Bobby’s Burger Palace (casual restaurant by Bobby Flay), Ballo Italian, and Sol Toro (a Mexican cantina). Foxwoods' Resort Casino's most famous restaurants include Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen, Guy Fieri's Foxwoods Kitchen + Bar, David Burke Prime, Hard Rock Cafe, and Sugar Factory. If you're trying to choose which casino to go to solely based on food, I would suggest looking at the restaurant list for both, choosing exactly what restaurant you plan on going to, and making sure they are available for the date and time you want. Weekends book up super quickly!

Who Has Better Entertainment: Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods?

Mohegan Sun Casino is considered to have the better entertainment compared to Foxwoods Resort Casino. This is because Mohegan Sun has a 10,000 seat area, which allows them to host live music, comedy shows, and other major performances. Foxwoods Casino, on the other hand, just does not have as many entertainment venues as Mohegan Sun does which means that they attract less entertainment despite hosting some live shows and events. This makes complete sense though because while Mohegan Sun Casino is focused on a holistic approach with gambling, dining, and entertainment options all having important value, Foxwoods Resort Casino is mainly focused on offering exceptional gambling, gaming options, and family-friendly activities.

Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun for Shopping, Spas, and Extra Amenities

As far as extra amenities go, I would say that Foxwoods Resort Casino definitely wins in the shopping category with the Tanger Outlets. While Mohegan Sun Casino does have some more famous brands to shop from like Yankee Candle, Swarovski, Athleta, Coach, and Sephora, the Tanger Outlets has so many more clothing stores. Some of the most popular stores in the Tanger Outlets include Nike, Adidas, Coach, Banana Republic, American Eagle, Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, and Vineyard Vines. This is a great place to go if you're looking for a shopping experience very similar to the Clinton Outlets with a ton of stores to choose from (but this time it's indoors!).

As far as the spas go, both Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Resort Casino have great spas with a number of luxurious treatments for guests to choose from.

The other category Foxwoods Resort Casino really shines is in the extra amenities category. With on-site indoor go-carts, VR games, bowling, zip lining, an arcade, hiking trails and top golf, there's so much to choose from regardless of how old you are. Mohegan Sun Casino in comparison does not have as many extra amenities or activities, especially for kids, with only a Cyber Quest/Kids Quest to keep them entertained.

Is Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods More Family-Friendly?

Foxwoods Resort Casino is definitely more family-friendly and this is because there are more activities for the entire family. While Mohegan Sun Casino has two great casinos, multiple high-end dining options, and some shopping, there isn't much for children to do. While there is a Cyber Quest/Kids Quest and more live entertainment options, that's about where it ends. Foxwoods Resort Casino, on the other hand, has an entire mall to shop from with famous clothing brands for all ages to enjoy, as well as on-site indoor go-carts, VR games, bowling, zip lining, and an arcade.

Which Casino Has a Better Vibe: Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun?

Mohegan Sun Casino is rated best overall when it comes to which Connecticut casino has a better atmosphere. This is because it's less crowded and is known to have a more elegant and refined atmosphere while Foxwoods Resort Casino is a little more chaotic, attracting families to all of their amenities.

Final Verdict: Should You Visit Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods in 2025?

The answer is-it depends! If you're looking for a more luxury, adult experience with gambling and dining then I would suggest going to Mohegan Sun. If you're bringing your family with children, I would suggest going to Foxwoods Resort Casino, where you can bring your children to the mall section of the casino or you can try out one of the many activities the casino offers. Regardless of which you choose though, both casinos were highly rated compared to all the casinos in the United States based on a number of categories, so you really can't go wrong here!
